A task-based approach
Tasks can be classified into three types, basically: first-, second- and third-generation tasks. In first-generation tasks the basic goal is the development of communicative skills in a certain area of the foreign language being learnt. Examples of such activities are problem-solving, role-plays and simulations. In second generation tasks learners are expected to collect information, analyse it, decide on the most adequate procedure, select the most relevant data, organise the information obtained, and then analyse the procedures and results, for example writing a report. Third generation tasks include the second plus an extra development in personality and attitude, for example in group work and debates.
