Pulp fiction refers to cheap, disposable novels about crime. Australian pulp fiction of the 1940s and 50s was enormously popular. The reason could be found in 1939 when Australia imposed a tax that effectively banned cheap American novels. The local industry needed entertaining reading and all of the sudden a range of authors and artists that had been ignored appeared.
