1984: How Much Fact In Fiction?
The aim of this lesson plan is to place George Orwell's "1984" in the historical context of 1949. The novel was not only an attack against Stalinism but also a statement of dissatisfaction with political trends in the "democratic" world of Western Europe and the United States. Students may compare the society in "1984" and today's, debating privacy and why it is violated by the government, media, corporations or other entities. A list of websites on current privacy-related issues is provided, along with a vocabulary section.
