Patricians and plebs
Roman citizens were divided into two main social groups: patricians and plebs. Patricians were a minority of the population. They were descendants of the aristocratic families that founded Rome. They owned land and livestock and governed the city. Plebs were the majority of the population. They included anyone who had arrived in the city after its founding.
