On the 28th June we started our descent into the crater. It was like a large cone – wide at the top and narrower at the bottom. It seemed about 2,000 feet deep. Hans didn’t take us down the crater vertically. We went round and round the inside, in a spiral. It wasn’t easy and we had to go slowly. Some parts of the cone were covered with glaciers and I was afraid of falling but Hans used the ropes to tie us together. [...]
