The Alsace-Lorraine conflict
Germany and France had been fighting and arguing over the Alsace-Lorraine territories for centuries. These two border lands had belonged to France since 1648, but they were also home to a large contingent of Protestants who were of German origin. As a result, Germany claimed the lands as its own.
